About This Calculator

Social Security Calculator is a free, independent tool that estimates your monthly retirement benefit and helps you compare the tradeoffs of claiming at different ages.

How the calculation works

The tool approximates your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME) from your reported average salary and years worked, then applies the Social Security Administration's official Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) formula using the 2025 bend points ($1,226 and $7,391) to estimate your benefit at Full Retirement Age. It then applies the SSA's published early-claiming reduction schedule and Delayed Retirement Credit rate (8% per year) to estimate your benefit at any age between 62 and 70, along with a simplified break-even analysis comparing lifetime totals across claiming ages.

What this is not

This is a simplified estimate, not an official benefit calculation. The real SSA formula uses your actual indexed earnings history across your entire career, not an average salary figure, and it accounts for details this tool does not, such as non-covered pensions (WEP/GPO), cost-of-living adjustments, and your exact earnings record. It does not constitute financial or retirement advice. For your official, personalized estimate, create a free account at ssa.gov/myaccount — this is the authoritative source and should be used before making any claiming decision.
